ACCEL Schools Asbestos Awareness & Worksite Requirements
Who Must Complete This Training
All ACCEL Schools personnel, contractors, custodial, and maintenance staff are required to complete Asbestos Awareness Certification before performing any work in school buildings that contain, or may contain, asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM). This includes both full-time and short-term workers who could encounter ACBM during normal duties.
Regulatory Standards
Asbestos awareness training is mandated under the following federal regulations:
- AHERA 40 CFR 763.92(a)(1): Requires all maintenance and custodial staff to complete at least two (2) hours of asbestos awareness training.
- AHERA 40 CFR 763.92(a)(2): Requires an additional fourteen (14) hours of training for staff who perform activities that may disturb ACBM.
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1001(j)(7)(iv): Requires employers to provide ongoing asbestos awareness instruction for employees who may contact or disturb asbestos materials during work.

The Asbestos Awareness course satisfies these AHERA and OSHA requirements. It can be completed in approximately 120 minutes and includes:

Before Beginning Work

- Review the most recent inspection and AMPS documentation for their assigned property.
- Confirm whether any areas of operation contain asbestos-containing materials or other hazards when disturbed.
- Contact the facility administrator or environmental coordinator if clarification is needed.
Inspection and AMPS data are available at the top of your training portal page under ACCEL Documentation.
